My name is Dennis Oehlers.
I began this blog as a requirement of my photojournalism class, which I’m taking because it will further my experience and knowledge in the journalism field.
What I have learned about news so far is that a jubilant story doesn’t attract the audience as much as a despairing story. I don’t think journalists have enough power or control in changing that attitude.
As a collegiate journalism student, I believe I have a unique opportunity that accredited journalists do not have. Whereas they have access to powerful figures, I have an easier time in reporting news that people cannot read about online. For example, I would have an easier time in reporting on the local crack house because they’d feel less threatened because of the little power I have in the news world.
As far as power, I believe a professional journalist has much more of it than I do, and thus will be heard and followed by many more people than me.
In conclusion, I believe until I become a professional journalist or create a huge controversy with something I write, my power as a collegiate journalist is very limited.
